Lobar Associates Helps Giant Foods Reopen Just Two Weeks After Devastating Fire

On May 20, at 4:00am a speculated pressure washer malfunction sparked a roof insulation fire inside the GIANT at Green Ridge Plaza in Scranton, PA. Giant knew exactly who to depend on to get their store reopened as soon as possible.

First on site was ServePro to handle the cleanup from the fire and water damage. Once the extent of the damage was visible, it was time to call in Lobar Associates. We rallied several of our specialty groups to turn this job around quickly. After remediation was complete, Lobar Design & Engineering was on site to provide a structural evaluation.

Next, our Lobar Steel division installed reinforcement to the undamaged existing bar joists, and new decking needed to repair the roof. Their team spent a 14+ hour day – in the pouring rain – along with our very own C.O.O., VP of Estimating, Professional Engineer, and Superintendent all working right alongside the tradesmen to get the job done.

Next up were our amazing Lobar Roofing division, who not only procured materials in under a week – compared to a typical 6-8 weeks – but also ripped off and installed several thousand square feet of new roof in under 4 days. At the same time, our Lobar Associates crews were hard at work putting in 12-hour days installing new drywall, grid and tile and finishes inside the store.

Once the drywall was up, , the GIANT team jumped in to restock the store with fresh products and produce. Thanks to this collaborative, fast-paced effort, the store was able to reopen to the public just two weeks after the fire.

This emergency project is a powerful example of Lobar Associates’ “Whatever It Takes” mentality. When time, quality, and teamwork matter most, we rise to the occasion—delivering results under pressure and helping our partners move forward faster.
